Up in Caithness near a place called Ulbster, there’s a set of stone steps that feel like they lead into another world. The Whaligoe Steps, 330 of them, carved right into the cliffside, all the way down to an old fishing harbour. Fisherwomen used to climb this daily with baskets of herring on their backs.
