Bob Keeshan had created and then played Captain Kangaroo between 1955 and 1984, at the time it was the the longest-running nationally broadcast children's television program. He suffered a heart attack in the early 80s and underwent bypass surgery leading to his retirement from the show. Fun Facts: Bob Keeshan joined the Marines in 1945 and throughout his career and even in some of his obituaries he was labeled a “decorated combat veteran” who fought on the famous battlegrounds of Iwo Jima.
