On September 20, 2025, Newport Beach Police Department officers were informed of a license plate reader activation involving a stolen vehicle that related to a carjacking and murder that occurred a few hours earlier in the city of Carlsbad at approximately 12:55 AM Newport Beach. The vehicle was located near East Coast Highway and Newport Coast Drive. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and that is when a vehicle pursuit and ensued.
