The NHTSA contacted Tesla after several videos showed incidents involving its robotaxis after the service was launched in Austin on Sunday.

In one of the videos, posted by an investor of the company, a Tesla Model Y enters an Austin intersection in a left-turn-only lane. The Tesla hesitates to make the turn, swerves right and proceeds into an unoccupied lane meant for traffic moving in the opposite direction.

These observers expressed a range of views about Tesla’s prospects but all cautioned against assuming a light-speed robotaxi rollout. Some pointed to advantages Tesla might exploit to overtake rivals including Alphabet’s Waymo and a host of Chinese auto and tech companies.
