In case anyone worried Stephen Colbert was going to go quietly into the night after CBS canceled The Late Show, it’s clear he won’t. In an early clip posted from tonight’s show, Colbert responded to President Trump’s gleeful social media post about his firing.

In his monologue opening Monday’s “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert ,” Colbert spoke about Trump’s exulting over CBS ‘s sudden decision to axe the show. “I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings,” the U.S. president wrote on Truth Social on Friday.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert has never won any Emmy in its previous nine seasons despite some notable streaks of excellence. (It has been nominated 31 times.) For much of that period, it competed in late-night’s top category against Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, which Emmy voters love the way Oliver loves a minor-league baseball team.
