Vice President JD Vance cast the tie-breaking vote President Donald Trump needed for the Senate to pass his “big, beautiful” bill 51-50 on Tuesday and send it back to the House with some changes.

The release of the bill’s draft had been delayed as the Senate parliamentarian reviewed the measure to ensure it complied with the chamber’s strict “Byrd Rule,” named for the late Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va. It largely bars policy matters from inclusion in budget bills unless a provision can get 60 votes to overcome objections.

Trump and his allies have touted the bill for its tax cuts and immigration enforcement funding, while Democrats, including Connecticut's senators, slammed it for its cuts to the social safety net, while noting that wealthy Americans will disproportionately benefit from the tax savings.
