Bristol City Council, which has 34 Green Party councillors, could become the first local authority in England to introduce the policy, which it claims will save £2.3million

The Green-led council said less frequent collections could cut the amount of waste going to landfill or being burned by "between 7,000 and 10,000 tonnes".

It has begun a public consultation on potential changes to three-weekly or four-weekly collections until 10 March. The authority's deputy leader, Heather Mack, said the move would reduce the cost and "the impact on the environment",
