A former Carolina Panthers coach and Charlotte native coach has taken a new NFL job, according to reports. Steve Wilks, who went to West Charlotte High School and App State, has been hired as the New York Jets’ next defensive coordinator.

Former Los Angeles Chargers coaches just keep making waves during the hiring cycle. Right on the heels of a former Chargers coach landing a job as a coordinator with the Miami Dolphins, another has landed with the Carolina Panthers.

The Jaguars, for the second time in as many years, want to interview a Panthers coach for their defensive coordinator position.

The New York Jets have their defensive coordinator for Aaron Glenn. The team has reportedly tabbed veteran, longtime NFL coach and coordinator Steve Wilks as the DC for Glenn’s coaching staff, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero: The #Jets have agreed to terms with Steve Wilks as their defensive coordinator, per sources.

Steve Wilks has agreed to terms to be the New York Jets' defensive coordinator under new head coach Aaron Glenn, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday night.

The New York Jets have hired Steve Wilks as the team’s new defensive coordinator, according to ESPN. Wilks, who served in the same role at the San Francisco 49ers in 2023, replaces Jeff Ulbrich, who was the Jets defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2024.

Wilks, who replaces Jeff Ulbrich as the Jets’ defensive coordinator, also has head coaching experience. He was Arizona’s coach in 2018 and was fired after the Cardinals finished 3-13. Wilks also was Carolina’s interim coach when he replaced the fired Matt Rhule in 2022 and went 6-6 with the Panthers.

According to reports, the Jaguars were denied a request to interview Tampa Bay Buccaneers OL coach Kevin Carberry for a similar role with the team.
