The designations include the Sinaloa cartel, Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación, Cartel del Noroeste, La Familia Michoacana and the Carteles Unidos

Mexico says that its cartels largely obtain weapons brought across the border from the United States and has sued gunmakers in the U.S. for their alleged role in arming criminals. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to label the cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.

Claudia Sheinbaum warns that Mexico could broaden its lawsuit against U.S. gun manufacturers if the U.S. classifies Mexican cartels as terrorist groups.
