A rare tsunami warning was issued for part of Alaska’s coast after a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck near Sand Point in the Aleutian Islands. A small tsunami wave was measured at Sand Point, Alaska.

The giant earthquake was recorded at 12:37 p.m. local time, southeast of Sand Point, a community located on Popof Island in the Aleutian Chain.

A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska on July 16, 2025. While significant, the 1964 Prince William Sound earthquake was a massive one with a 9.2 magnitude. It was the strongest ever recorded in North America and caused a huge tsunami across the Pacific.
