A marine heat wave spanning much of the North Pacific Ocean is already influencing weather in North America and is poised to make its mark on winter. But forecasters have another global weather pattern to consider: La Niña.

“Jerry is moving toward the west-northwest near 23 mph (37 km/h). This general motion is expected to continue with a decrease in forward speed during the next couple of days, followed by a turn toward the north-northwest and north beginning on Friday,” the agency said.

Tropical Storm Imelda formed over the Bahamas on Sept. 28, and is forecast to bring rough seas, storm surge and potentially rain through mid-week.
