WESTFIELD — GameStop, the video game retailer at the center of the “memestock” trading craze of 2021, is closing stores around the country this week including its Westfield, Hadley, Holyoke and East Longmeadow locations.

Headquartered in Grapevine, Texas, GameStop is the world’s largest video game retailer. Founded in Dallas in 1984 as Babbage’s and renamed GameStop in 1999, the company’s performance declined in the mid-to-late 2010s due to the shift to online gaming sales and unsuccessful smartphone retail investments.

An avid game collector has put their haul on display in a rather unique way, by building their very own GameStop in their basement.
