The agency that runs the highway said it was switching to another company to provide chargers that work for electrical vehicles other than just Teslas.

New Jersey canceled Tesla’s charging contract on the Turnpike with little public explanation. Applegreen was selected despite having far fewer charging stations and higher electricity rates. Tesla added 116 off-Turnpike chargers and remains open to negotiations with state officials.

Tesla called the decision to eliminate the charging stations a setback for EV users on the highway, adding that it offered the NJTA above-market commercial terms, including an offer to build Superchargers at all New Jersey service plazas and with equipment upgrades like screens and NACS with CCS1 “magic docks.”
