Guests of Jamaica's Riu Montego Resort are under fire for their treatment of staff amid Hurricane Melissa, a category five storm that decimated parts of the country.

CBS News Miami has been in touch with families living through the aftermath, including Marvin Edwards, who rode out the hurricane in Montego Bay.

The storm was making its way to the Bahamas and Bermuda on Thursday morning as Jamaica confronted the devastation from one of the most potent storms ever recorded anywhere.

Hurricane Melissa, which reached Category 5 strength before making landfall on Oct. 28, 2025, forced the travelers to abandon their beachfront plans and take refuge in a wine cellar beneath their Montego Bay villa.

According to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Melissa, now a Category 2 storm, is moving across eastern Cuba, bringing damaging winds, flash flooding and storm surge to the island after pummeling Jamaica. Melissa was located about 45 miles northwest of Guantanamo, Cuba.
