Oakland is getting another change of leadership. The City Council voted to elect Kevin Jenkins as the new president, who will then take over as mayor until a special election in April.

IN AN EVENTFUL and somewhat convoluted day in Oakland’s civic life, Councilmember Kevin Jenkins is now interim mayor, Councilmember Noel Gallo is temporarily council president and Barbara Lee filed papers to run in the upcoming special mayoral election.

Jenkins was born and raised in East Oakland. He is the son of two Oakland Unified School District employees, a graduate of Oakland High School and was first elected to the council in 2022.

In a complex leadership shuffle, Jenkins was elected council president and elevated to mayor, temporarily. Noel Gallo now becomes council president.
