Flag Day, like other notable and patriotic celebrations, will be observed (once again) on June 14. Here's what we have learned about the holiday.
More than 75 years after Flag Day became U.S. law, the stars and stripes grab our gaze these days in constant portraits of how Americans see their country’s promise — sometimes dotted along historic graves of military veterans, draped upside down over a protester, or painted on a barn.

The first, local Flag Day observances came after the Civil War and eventually a federal law designated June 14 as Flag Day in 1949, under World War I combat veteran Harry Truman. He declared in a proclamation the next year that the U.S. flag symbolizes freedom and “protection from tyranny.”
Flag Day was proclaimed 100 years ago by President Woodrow Wilson in a speech May 30, 1916. Almost exactly 60 years later - on April 25, 1976 - Rick Monday of the Chicago Cubs raced across Dodgers Stadium’s outfield and snatched up a U.S. flag that two people were trying to burn.
