Tensions are escalating in Los Angeles after protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement gripped the city on Sunday, with demonstrators clashing with law enforcement and setting vehicles on fire downtown.

On Monday, Trump, a Republican, sent 700 U.S. Marines to Los Angeles to guard federal buildings as protests there continued. The marine battalion adds to California National Guard units Trump had already sent to the city to quell protests in defiance of Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Experts say it's highly unusual for a president to call up the National Guard when the governor of a state objects. And Newsom is strongly in opposition.
